The Daimler Smart car has is finally arriving in the states. Smart cars have been sold in 36 countries for the last 10 years.

The smart car is only 1800 pounds but you are safer in this car than others. 4 air bags and a roll cage. It gets 40 km in the city. It’s top speed is 90mph.

Why did it take so long? Well, cities are now starting to suffer from congestion. The “Smart car” was designed to be an easy parking car - short enough to allow “nose-in” parking.

Its length equals the width of a regular parking slot, 98.4 in, and allows 2 or 3 smart cars to fit in one parking space.

The smart car was intiiated by Swatch watches. Swatch teamed up Daimler-Benz after General Motors rejected the project as potentially unprofitable, and a potential partnership with VOlkswagen never materialized. The factory complex in France, was established in 1994 as a joint-venture of Daimler-Benz and Swatch.

In June 2006, DaimlerChrysler confirmed that Smart would be officially launched in the United States in the first quarter of 2008. The cars are offered through a dealership holding company Penske Automotive Group, which created a new U.S. dealership network for the brand under the name Smart USA.[4] Initially, an updated gasoline powered Fortwo was offered, starting around US$12,000.[5] The new model made its debut at European auto shows in November 2006.

The unique design of the Smart has received much attention in the U.S. In its April issue, Men’s Vogue raised the question: in a nation where your supersized car is your castle, is the Smart too mini for a man

My answer - in a country where questions like these are important, the problem is that the Smart car is too big?
